I'm so glad I discovered your galleries. Great pics and I haven't perused them all yet. I was looking for a good shot of ALTAIR and came across it. Hope all is well.

Hi, Neil, I am former Marine, former HI National Guard Band. I was researching a pic I came across of the National Historic Landmark sign. I visited Roi as our band toured some S. Pacific nations for a 50th Anniversary of WWII. I guess that would have been '94-'95, or there-abouts. What was really exciting about it was that the country was celebrating its 1st Independence Day. The U.S. Navy brought a ship into the area and had a fireworks display, which the people didn't know what to make of. They also had a sailor, who was supposed to parachute into the lagoon, but he missed and went into the ocean! Thanks for all the pics you've posted. They bring back good memories.

Hi Neal:

Working on radio stuff for me these days. Keeping warm in tonight's show storm.

Did you ever get the station setup in that surplus building on Roi?
I would be able to use it now.

I really enjoyed your pictures of Kwajalein and Roi-Namour. I especially enjoyed the note to you from Anthony Hastert on 28 March, 2007 concerning the USS Matanikow CVE 101 unloading planes at Roi when the second A-Bomb was dropped on Japan. I was part of a large draft of Seamen Ist class shipped out of San Diego on that ship along with the aircraft, all in a state of preservation. The flight and hanger decks were jam packed with planes. We slept on cots among the planes on the hanger deck. I went over the side on a cargo net into a launch to Namour.I served on Kwj.,Roi, and later Guam 1945-46.

Hello Neil,
I knew you from the Powerhouse days. Great, great photographs. You are not only a gifted photographer, but also an interesting person. Your work is especially intersting to me as my son, Eric, has just launched his career in the US Navy and I will point to your work here and ask him to please photodocument his travels.
All the best,

Neil; Very sorry to hear about the misfortune out there. Thanks for sending the pictures, it is hard to imagine the kind of place you're operating from without them. Hope things get better and we hear you back on the bands soon.

Beautiful pictures. When was the storm that did all this damage. I spend 28 years on Kwajalein and Roi Namur. I left Roi Namur in 1999. The pine tree on the east end of building B I planted the year the BQ opened and is in front of the corner room I lived in. I was also KVZI station engineer and kept it on the air for years. Is the deck still outside the station ? Most of the plumeria trees I planted. The creeping thyme I planted because I disliked the darn mowers around the BQs when people were trying to sleep. Are the fish still in the water catchment on the road from the Marina to Tradex. I put them there to eat the mosquitos. Keep posting pictures. It brings back many positive memories.

Neil,

You may not remember me, but I worked as an IT guy on Roi from 2003 to 2004. Your photos bring back pleasant memories. I remember folks on Roi being down-to-earth and friendly.

My husband Gil Foster worked on "Kwaj"from 1979-1983 From RCA Moorestown. NJ He worked on Tradex Radar on Roi Namur. We spent 4 heavenly years out there and enjoyed every moment --we have lots of freinds from NJ that we see frequently --who were there at the same time, We are retired in Florida and just last night at dinner met an engineer from GTE who said he designed the Altair System out there --he was there years before we. But told us to look you up on the internet .Glad I did --rejust reived some very happy memories Thank you for the beautiful photos.
