This is a long-shot as I believe Dietrich is a fairly common name – but I have a book signed by Pablo Picasso to Fred Dietrich in Paris in 1924. I’m trying to figure out who this Dietrich was & thought you might know.

Saw a female hummer outside our kitchen window this morning. We keep Salvia plants under the window and in the Spring we begin to see our hummer family return. This is the earliest we have seen a hummer. Susan and Jay Yelton. We live in Rosehill in Tallahassee.

Hi Susan,

I've had one of those this summer too. Its pollen from a large flower like trumpet vine that gets on their head when they feed. Looks just like someone painted it on there. Thanks for posting my update on your site, that really helps to get the word out about winter hummers in this area. All reports from banders and homeowners across the east is that this is the best season for ruby-throats in years.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for sending us the latest updates for winter hummers! You always take great photos.
Yesterday, we saw a hummer at our feeder and cardinal guard that had a big yellow dot on its head...any info on that?

Hi Fred,
Just left your gallery. Some great pictures. Thank you for sharing.
I have two Ruby-throats that are lingering here at my Niceville, Fl. backyard. I guess I will call Fred Basset if they are still here at the end of the month. He came here twice several years ago to band a little Black-chinned but she was to smart to get caught!
haven't been birding much, health issues....I was hoping to get over to Dauphin Island later this month for the AOS and FOS combined meeting. Should be good. Happy birding, Pat

Hi!!

Thanks for the great pics of the sinkholes, especially Big Dismal!! My friends and I used to go to Big Dismal a lot to swim back in the late 70s & early 80s. We had to jump down into the dark sinkhole from about 30 ft. up... scary... then climb up through the red clay sides.
It was interesting to read about the connecting caverns, etc. I never knew there was a cavern under Big Dismal. Thanks!! Linda

Hey, Fred,

Hope you are well. Have been in New Smyrna for a month dealing with 2 parents' health issues. Can you give me a good free site for the trails in this area, either hiking of water? Aimee, my daughter is here with me and we need to get away to woods and water before long. Best to Eleanor and Mark. Liked your pictures.

Thanks,

Sam

Hey Fred...........Just looking up old Air Force buddies. Is this THE Fred Dietrich who was my bud in Pakistan and San Antonio? Is this the Fred who ran with me in the Ernie Memorial Trophy Race in Pakistan in 1966? The Fred whom I scarfed crutches for when he hurt his knee? The roomie with whom I lined our walls with Playboy pics? The Fred who was my best man for my first marriage? I hope so.

Amazing shots of banding hummingbirds. Really great work both with the birds and your camera! Ended up finding them while looking for images of feather growth patterns. :)

I have enjoyed the trip. Shared it with Hose. Keep the photos coming. Only way I'll ever get to Chile. I'm still learning the D70. Your Friend!

Hi Fred ... I found your photos while surfing for references to, Fred Dietrich.
Great photos. By coincidence, I also ran track and cross country in high school and college, and so did my daughter. She now has three great kids that look like they will be runners too. Thanks for sharing.

I live in Alachua County, Florida and my son has forwarded these most amazing photos to me, and am delighted to get them. I am an avid fan of the hummers and look forward to next spring to see them again. Glad you have overwinter visitors.
